MONTEBELLO ISLANDS

DISTANCE: The journey from Exmouth to the Montebello islands is 120 nautical miles.

The archipelago features a vast network of clear-water lagoons, reefs, and islands, offering a wide variety of habitats for spearfishers.
You’ll find sheltered inshore reefs with species like coral trout, bluebone, mangrove jack, and spangled emperor, while the outer reef edges and channels attract larger pelagics like Spanish mackerel, trevelly, and tuna.
ROWLEY SHOALS
DEPARTS FROM: Broome, WA
DISTANCE: The journey from Broome to the Rowley Shoals is approximately 190 nautical miles.
TRAVEL TIME: It will take approximately 21 hours to arrive.
SPEARFISHING:
Offers clearer water, larger reef species, and deeper diving over coral reefs.
It's made up of three coral atolls rising abruptly from deep ocean water, and the reef structure is steep, dramatic, and visually stunning. The visibility is exceptional — often 30 to 50 metres.
You’re likely to encounter species like dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, red bass, jobfish. Because of the atoll structure, you’ll mostly be spearing on drop-offs, ledges, and outer reef walls in deeper water.
SCOTT REEF
DEPARTS FROM: Broome, WA
DISTANCE: The journey from Broome to Scott Reef is approximately 250 nautical miles.
TRAVEL TIME: It will take approximately 28 hours to arrive.
SPEARFISHING:
The ultimate remote spearfishing destination with deep reef drops and big fish.
Scott Reef is remote and less frequently fished, but for seasoned spearos, it's arguably the most rewarding. Massive dogtooth tuna, GTs, large jobfish, and various species of grouper inhabit the reef ledges and drop-offs.
Spearfishing here is typically deep, open-ocean work — bluewater and reef-edge hunting. Visibility is usually excellent.
